This Regional Centre, whose acronym is "UNRCPD", was created by United Nations General Assembly Resolution A/42/39D in 1987 and became operational in 1989. Since its inception, the Centre has promoted dialogue and confidence-building in disarmament and regional security related matters.

News United Nations Conference in Japan to discuss actions towards a nuclear weapon-free world August 23,2010 The Conference will assess the outcome of the 2010 Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and address ways to make progress in achieving nuclear disarmament, non-proliferation and promoting the peaceful uses of nuclear energy.   Opening remarks by the Secratary-General at a press conference in the Urakami Cathedral, Nagasaki, Japan August 05,2010 I have come to Japan to commemorate the terrible events of 1945 in Hiroshima and Nagasak and to join my voice with all those who say this can never happen again. More than 75,000 people died instantly here in Nagasaki. A similar number perished in Hiroshima. Many more died from injuries and radiation poisoning.
